In order to improve pollination across our orchard and the overall Batesville community, we finished installation of six beehives as well as several wildflower meadows. Our Italian and hybrid bee colonies are already growing nicely. Grapevines are self-pollinating, but some believe that the bees can help improve yields. The bees certainly help our blueberry and other fruit trees.
Consistent with changing palates favoring white wines, we just completed two new blocks to the north of Batesville Road planted with Grüner Veltliner and Albariño vines. Additionally, we added to our block of Vermentino.
We are excited to announce that In January, we began developing an additional six acres of vineyard on the north side of Batesville Road, divided into two separate blocks. These blocks were once apple orchards, abandoned in the 1930s. The soil is rich in clay and loam, providing an ideal environment for grapevines.
We plan to complete the site development, including the installation of deer fencing and trellises, in time for planting in April 2025.
In response to the growing consumer preference for white wines, we will be planting Grüner Veltliner and Albariño in the new blocks.
With the help of Tinder Cattle and Vineyard we just finished planting another six acres of vines including more Cabernet Franc and adding Merlot and Vermentino.
The Summer of 2024 has been extremely hot, but we are very pleased with the initial growth of the young vines.
With the help of Bluehawk Builders we also finished construction of our new barn and workshop. This new facility finally gives us a place to store all our equipment as well as a base for our vineyard operations.
